The grass still sways Where your footsteps once belonged The old tree wears the same low branch You climbed so many years ago Threads of sunlight slip between the branches Settling softly upon my face As though they searched for yours And found me waiting instead I wonder if the wind remembers The sound of your laughter better than I do It never tries to explain It passes through The river keeps polishing the old stones As if no years had passed at all I stand where everything continued Long after I was gone The forest never closed its gates It carried on I leave without disturbing anything The branches keep their patient sway Tomorrow morning all of this Will greet another day If I should vanish once again This place will never make a sound The grass will lean beneath the wind As though I'm around
