I look at you as we embrace. I look into your eyes and wonder about our fate. I hold your hands and kiss them, my lips touching your skin, my eyes looking up at you. I wonder if you understand. Then I hold your hands against my heart as my other arm pulls you in. Your hands are soft, warmer now from my touch. I feel as though I have lived many lives. My appearance is still young, my health is good, yet something in my spirit feels wrong. I look at you. When I’m with you, I feel alive. Yet I feel an otherworldly dread. How I fear you will wither and fade, carried away by Father Time. I fear that time will rob me of you again, as though it has happened before. Will I endure when time takes you away? Then I weep, sublime tears from a hardened soul, a feeling I have never known, yet somehow remember. Tears that carry my love, a longing like eternity’s pain. I ask you, my love, in this moment, right now, “Am I dead? Do I haunt you here in our bed? For I swear, this is not real. I must be dead. You can’t be real. I love you so much.” You shake your head with a curious look. We embrace as before, as though it is both the last time and the first. I embrace the fear that you, my beloved, might be taken from me. It feels strange, as though this has happened before, as though my heart has burned like this before and will be dimmed again. Father Time, with his sickle and the ring of cold space. I would evoke him in this place. Yet I believe you. I try to see that there is still life animating me. It took so long for me to feel love this way. Now I fear it will die someday. In my dark night, your candle is the only thing that warms my forever night.
