We Survived Y2K

We Survived Y2K (But Our Love Didn’t) You kept three gallons by the television And twenty dollars folded in your shoe You made me shut the computer down by midnight I laughed until I saw it scared you So I filled the bathtub like you asked me And unplugged everything at ten At twelve-oh-one you kissed me like we’d made it And I thought maybe we’d be fine again The clocks rolled over, nothing burned The phones still rang, the wheels still turned You held me like we’d cheated fate By February you were scared again You were always waiting for the sky to fall I was always waiting for you to look at me We survived Y2K But our love didn’t Then came the emails marked IMPORTANT And websites only you believed A preacher talking backwards on the radio A date you circled New Year’s Eve When one end of the world went missing You always found another one And every time I said we’d wake tomorrow You looked at me like I was in on it The clocks rolled over, nothing burned The phones still rang, the wheels still turned You held me like we’d cheated fate Then found another closing date You were always waiting for the sky to fall I was always waiting for you to look at me We survived Y2K But our love didn’t I learned not to laugh about the Rapture Or the people waiting on a ship I learned every question sounded hostile If it came from someone on my lips You’d forgive the end of the world Before you’d forgive me for doubting it I spent years telling you tomorrow would come Then one morning I didn’t The clocks roll over, nothing burns The phones still ring, the whole world turns Another midnight proves you wrong Another warning comes along You were always waiting for the sky to fall I finally stopped waiting for you to look at me The world survived every ending you could give it We survived Y2K But our love didn’t
