Lyrics
[Intro: whispered, distant, vinyl crackle] Midnight… Engine low… Streetlights passing slow… I thought I was alone. [Verse 1] Rain on the glass, nowhere to be Blacktop shining underneath Radio static, low and thin Something moved behind my seat I don’t remember picking you up Don’t remember hearing the door But every time I check the mirror You’re a little closer than before [Hook: hypnotic, chopped vocals] Night passenger Riding in the dark Night passenger You never leave a mark Night passenger Don’t breathe behind me Night passenger Why won’t you let me see? [Verse 2] Red light, dead street Hands tight around the wheel Dashboard glow on an empty face Trying to remember what is real Three turns, same road I swear I’ve passed this place The clock says 3:33 But time won’t move an inch Then I hear you laughing Soft against the rain I look into the mirror And I see my own face [Hook] Night passenger Riding in the dark Night passenger You never leave a mark Night passenger Don’t breathe behind me Night passenger Why won’t you let me see? [Break: distorted, whispered] Don’t turn around… Don’t turn around… Don’t turn around… I already did. [Verse 3] Morning never comes The road keeps stretching on Headlights cut the darkness But the darkness carries on Your hand rests on my shoulder Cold as winter glass I finally stop the engine But you’re still sitting back I turn around… Nothing there. [Final Hook: heavier, chopped] Night passenger Riding in the dark Night passenger Living in my heart Night passenger I finally see Night passenger… You’ve been driving me. [Outro: fading] Engine low… Streetlights gone… Someone’s still in the backseat… Someone’s still… behind me…
