Lyrics
I PROMISE [Verse 1] I thought you were my forever, My “once upon a time,” I thought we’d write our story And your heart would stay with mine. You said you’d always love me, A promise so untrue, I said, “Don’t go,” But you went and followed through. You broke my heart The day you said we’re through. [Pre-Chorus] You said the words, “I love you,” I believed that they were true. I said the same thing back to you, And meant every word I knew. [Chorus] I promise, I promise, I’ll never let you go. I promise, I promise, You’ll always have my soul. When the road gets rough, When it gets too steep, I’ll be right beside you, That promise I will keep. You broke your promise, But I’ll keep mine. You left me lonely, But I’ll be alright. I promise, I promise, Through all that we’ve been through… I promised I would love you, And I still do. [Verse 2] You were my once in a lifetime, My “ride or die,” My “happy ever after,” The reason I could fly. Our fingers tightly laced Showed the world the love we had. How was I to know That feeling wouldn’t last? I promised you tomorrow, The next day and the next, My love, my joy, my sorrow, I shared with you the rest. You said you understood me, You said you’d always stay, But when the road got rough, You turned and walked away. [Pre-Chorus] Don’t promise me your heart Then leave the rest behind. Don’t say our love’s transcendent Then turn around and hide. I wanted you here beside me, To hold my hand and dream, To share the hopes and dreams That lived inside your head with me. [Chorus] I promise, I promise, I’ll never let you go. I promise, I promise, You’ll always have my soul. When the road gets rough, And when it gets too steep, I’ll be right beside you, That promise I will keep. You broke your promise, But I’ll keep mine. You left me lonely, But I’ll be alright. I promise, I promise, Through all that we’ve been through… I promised I would love you, And I still do. [Bridge] Maybe someday you’ll remember The love we left behind. Maybe someday you’ll discover What we couldn’t find. And maybe love will lead you Back to where we first began. Or maybe we’ll find healing In another’s loving hands. But if the road gets way too steep, Beside you I will stay. Behind you all the way… That promise I will keep. [Final Chorus] I promise, I promise, I’ll never let you go. I promise, I promise, You’ll always have my soul. When the road gets rough, Even when it’s way too steep, Always right beside you, That promise I will keep. I promise, I promise, My heart won’t change. You may have walked away, But my love remains. I promise, I promise, No matter what you do… I promised I would love you, And I still do. [Outro] I thought you were my forever, My “once upon a time.” Maybe forever isn’t always A lifetime intertwined. But if our love was real, Then it wasn’t all in vain. And somewhere in this broken heart, I still believe in love again. I promise… I promise anyway. [Chorus] I promise, I promise, I’ll never let you go. I promise, I promise, You’ll always have my soul. When the road gets rough, Even when it gets too steep, I’ll be right beside you, That promise I will keep. [Bridge] Maybe someday you’ll remember The love we left behind. Maybe someday you’ll discover What we couldn’t find. And maybe love will lead you Back to where we first began. Or maybe we’ll find healing In another’s loving hands. I promise, I promise, No matter what you do… I promised I would love you, And I still do.
