Lyrics
When I grow up... Funny. I thought I'd know. I thought grown-ups had the answers Kept them somewhere out of sight In a drawer beside the taxes And the pills that help them sleep at night Thought thirty came with wisdom Forty came with peace Instead we got subscriptions And passwords we can't keep We dress ourselves for meetings Say things like "circle back" Then eat cereal for dinner While our whole life's off the track So tell me— Is there a door? Is there a sign? Does somebody stamp your name And say you've crossed the line? Or do we just get older And learn to fake it well? Nobody fucking tells. WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE GROW UP? Who decides we've grown enough? We learned to work We learned to lie We learned to say that we're "just fine" We buy the house We pour the wine Pretend we're not just killing time If this is it Then tell me when— How do we know when we get there? Are we there yet? No. Are we there yet? ...Fuck knows. We learned which fork is proper Which sins require a door Which ones you tell your therapist And which ones you enjoy We learned that love gets complicated Money disappears Hangovers become biblical And weekends become dear We moisturize religiously While slowly going mad Buy expensive kitchen gadgets Just to feel like someone's dad Then Saturday we're seventeen With louder fucking toys Growing old is mandatory— Growing up? That's your choice. Maybe there isn't a finish line Maybe nobody arrives Maybe Mum was making dinner While quietly improvising life Maybe Dad didn't know the answer Maybe teachers didn't too Maybe every grown-up I believed in Was another frightened kid— Who grew. So here's to getting older Without becoming cold Here's to being stupid When we're eighty years old Here's to bad decisions Good stories Dirty jokes Here's to every little piece of us We weren't supposed to hold So... WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE GROW UP? WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE GROW UP? Maybe this is grown enough Pay your bills Call your mum Fall in love And fuck things up Change your mind Begin again Lose some lovers Keep your friends Dance too late Sleep till ten Swear you'll never drink again If this is life— Then let it be. Maybe growing up... Is knowing you never really do. Are we there yet? Not even close. When I grow up... I'll let you know.
