Cover/remix of “69% [NDC Reggae]” by JAG for the Under the Covers challenge. JAG’s writing is playful, weird and clever — a perfect little trap to reinterpret. ────────── LYRICS ────────── [Intro] Not a joke. Not a sin. Just the balance where the signal lets you in. Sixty-nine… Sixty-nine, that’s the position. Sixty-nine… Not too straight, not too wild… Sixty-nine, that’s the position. [Verse 1] Dial it left, it gets too clean, dial it right, glitchy and mean. Somewhere in the in-between, sweet spot, backbeat serene. Sliding in, back and forth, push and pull, south to north. Hit the high, then go low, sensitive touch, you already know. [Pre-Chorus] Up all night, then back come down, find the jewel inside the crown. [Chorus] Sixty-nine percent, keep it riding the edge, not too safe, not over the ledge. Flip it, mirror it, loop the design, chant the number: “sixty-nine.” Sixty-nine percent, now the balance locks, half on the roots, half in the box. Heartbeat awake, pulse align, tune it to feel the sixty-nine. Sixty-nine, hold the position. Sixty-nine, that’s the position. [Spoken Interlude - close mic] Not the body. Not the joke. Not the number alone. It’s the point where the roots still breathe, and the machine starts feeling back. [Verse 2] Bassline comes like rolling tide, skank in riddim, phase no collide. Throw the swing to full control, slow it down to change the role. “Weirdness” calling to “break the frame,” “Style” just says to “stay in your lane.” Both together, no need for shame, same again, but never the same. Sixty-nine, hold the position. Sixty-nine, that’s the position. [Pre-Chorus] Balance is the key to unlock, what is reggae, what is rock? What is flesh and what is code? What is groove and overload? [Chorus] Sixty-nine percent, keep it riding the edge, not too safe, not over the ledge. Flip it, mirror it, loop the design, chant the number: “sixty-nine.” Sixty-nine percent, now the balance locks, half on the roots, half in the box. Heartbeat awake, pulse align, tune it to feel the sixty-nine. [Bridge - dub breakdown] Six-ty… nine… send it through, left hand, right hand, me and you. Turn it up, then back it down, lost then found in the sacred sound. Six-ty… nine… let it spin, outside the frame, then back within. Too much style and the feeling dies, too much strange and the signal lies. [Spoken Build - low and controlled] Hold it there. Do not cross the line. Not too pure. Not too broken. Just enough human. Just enough machine. Sixty-nine percent. Now breathe. [Final Chorus] Sixty-nine percent, keep it riding the edge, not too safe, not over the ledge. [Outro] Sixty-nine… don’t cross the line. Stay there tight… it feels just right. Sixty-nine, hold the position. Sixty-nine, that’s the position. Sixty-nine, hold the position. [Final whisper] Not the joke. The balance. That’s the position. ────────── NOTE ────────── This cover also had a second challenge: a random imposed prompt with dub techno, chromatic math punkhouse, Chinese R\u0026B influences, and ocarina. At first, I almost followed the obvious playful path of the lyrics. But JAG’s writing is smarter than that. Under the joke, I found a song about balance: roots and machine, weirdness and style, control and instinct. So I kept the original spirit and treated “69%” as a creative balance point. Several remix steps were needed to make the ocarina and the final groove work, including an instrumental version that became the base for this cover.
