Transformation

Hey Dad. Still got your voicemails saved on my phone, I play them through tears in my eyes. Your cat’s my companion when it gets hardest. I scratch her back… she leans in like you’re still right here. Carbon to diamond, transformation. Held the dark, you never folded. Weight don’t get lighter, just spreads out, Now it’s in everything you touched. Play your voicemail to hear your laugh, You say my name like it’s still the same. I cut it off before it drops away, I can’t sit through that empty space. Brought your couch home to stay, When I packed it all away. She curls up there, so serene, Together we hold your memory. Didn’t know it would stay like this. Didn’t know it would hit like this. Carbon to diamond, transformation. Held the dark, you never folded. Weight don’t get lighter, just spreads out, Now it’s in everything you touched. I saw you stopping just to breathe, Shame on your face when you admit that need. Said you were fine, just tired, that’s all, But I could hear it in how you’d speak. You talked to me about God, about becoming, How all the hardship taught you something. Like you knew it didn’t end right here, Like death wasn't something to fear. I hear it now, what you meant. Still becoming. Carbon to diamond, transformation. Held the dark, you never folded. Weight don’t get lighter, just spreads out, Now it’s in everything you touched. You asked for coffee in that hospital bed. I said, "Yeah… I’ll get the nurse." “Thanks honey" "Love you Dad." ...Like we still had time Carbon to diamond, transformation. Held the dark, you never folded. Weight don’t get lighter, just spreads out, Now it’s in everything you touched. Still got your voicemails saved on my phone, Dad. I miss you.
