Lyrics
Only once Only once You stood by the vending machine With a drink you never opened Thumb on the silver tab Like it knew what we were holding I had something real to ask But the hallway hummed no So I kept it under my breath And let the blue light glow Ugly carpet, low ceiling Three in the morning, no sleep You said it looked like home Then laughed too quietly Maybe we only mattered once One floor too high, one borrowed rush You saw through me by accident And didn’t make me explain Maybe we only mattered once Not quite love, but close enough To leave a shape inside the dark That still knows my name Only once In the thinner air Only once But you were there Twenty first floor, cold glass City lights across your face We gave meaning to the view Like it could make us stay You leaned into the window Said the air felt thin up here I wanted to say me too But the words disappeared The city stayed awake below us We disappeared for a while You turned away before the morning Like remembering had teeth Maybe we only mattered once One floor too high, one borrowed rush You saw through me by accident And didn’t make me explain Maybe we only mattered once Not quite love, but close enough To leave a shape inside the dark That still knows my name You asked if I ever felt invisible I said yes before I thought You didn’t try to fix the silence You just sat inside it with me Smoke in the bathroom mirror Silver on the hotel wall You passed me the end of your cigarette Like a prayer with no words Maybe we only mattered once One floor too high, one borrowed rush You saw through me by accident And didn’t make me explain Maybe we only mattered once Not quite love, but close enough To leave a shape inside the dark That still knows my name Maybe we only mattered once But once was more than enough To make the world feel less empty Then give it back again At departures, you didn’t say goodbye You just looked at me too long That was enough I think I don’t know Only once Only once ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
