I almost forgot about that summer. I told myself... it was just how childhood felt... Everything seemed bigger back then. Every shortcut seemed longer. Every shop seemed endless. (Or maybe I was just smaller.) Eventually... I stopped thinking about it. Life moved on. Years passed. I never went back. Today... I walked past the old bakery. They renovated everything around it. New pavement. New signs. Different windows. Everything looked... normal. (Long pause.) I almost kept walking. Until I noticed... the shortcut. Exactly where it used to be. It wasn't there yesterday. I'm sure it wasn't. (I'm sure...) I stood there for a long time. Listening. Not because I heard anything... but because... it felt like somewhere... something... had finally realized... I'd come back. (Waiting...) I don't think I'll take that shortcut again. But... if you ever find one... that wasn't there before... don't ask anyone about it. (Long silence.) They'll only tell you... it's always been there. (Like it never left.)
