Song story
A student takes the Lover's Lane shortcut late at night and meets a girl in a polka-dot dress on the bench. Every night she asks him to walk her home, and every night she vanishes at the same lamppost. Cold hands, an uneaten fishball, songs from decades ago. A horror psychobilly ghost story, slap bass and twangy guitar warping into vaporwave, with a funeral brass band getting closer every chorus.
Lyrics
Eleven at night, I took the shortcut down Lover's Lane Late again from org work, no more jeeps on España There's a girl on the bench in a polka-dot dress Hair pinned back like a still from an old movie She looks up and asks me, "Do you know what time it is?" I tell her, "Eleven," she says, "Oh, it's later than I thought" Then she smiles like she's known me for a long, long time And I don't know why, but I sat down right beside her We talked until the stroke of midnight She laughed at every one of my corny jokes When I stood up to leave, she caught me by the sleeve And there was only one thing that she asked Walk me home, the road is dark tonight Walk me home, I've been waiting for so long Just as far as the lamppost, only there, only there Walk me home, won't you walk me home Every night after that, like we had a standing date I'd buy her fishballs on a stick, she never took a bite "I'm still full," she'd always say, and just smile at me Her hands were always cold, even in the heat of May She'd hum me songs I'd never heard in all my life She'd say, "That one's brand new, they play it on the radio" Same polka-dot dress, same pin in her hair But who was I to ask, and who was I to care When we reached the lamppost by the gate She'd always stop and say, "This is where I go" "Go on home now, and don't you look back" But I looked back, and she was gone Walk me home, the road is dark tonight Walk me home, I've been waiting for so long Just as far as the lamppost, only there, only there Walk me home, won't you walk me home One afternoon I wandered down an old and quiet hall There's a plaque on the wall and a photograph gone pale A polka-dot dress, hair pinned back just so The same smile, the same eyes Underneath the photo there's a name And a year, nineteen seventy-eight "She never made it home from Lover's Lane" And the whole hallway turned cold I went back to the bench at eleven that night She was there, still smiling, like nothing ever happened I didn't ask her anymore where home was I just took her cold hand in mine Walk me home, the road is dark tonight Walk me home, I've been waiting for so long Just as far as the lamppost, only there, only there Walk me home, won't you walk me home
