I sat down on the morning of September 5th, 2026 and started to write what I wanted to be a happy poem / positive lyrics... Before I knew it, I had tumbled back into the aftermath of echoes... Reverberating through my head, memories colliding - joy and trauma, laughter and terror, fun and fright... For some people, writing about the joy of life comes easy. For others, like myself, it's difficult to even think of a happy time in my mind... I know they're in there, somewhere... They are simply obscured by the dark shadows of thundering clouds - aches and pains from my childhood. I genuinely tried... I even re-wrote a lot of this to be far less dark and triggering. So what we have here is a tale of right now, today, the thoughts running through my mind, real-time. If it upsets or dismays anyone, that was never my intent. And yes, that face in the center of the artwork is myself... holding tinker-toys... many years ago, before the true horror began.
Hey, Kid… “Hey, kid… Are you all-right?” “(I said…) Are you all-right?” When I was a young boy (so long ago…) They told me to put my toys (away for-ever…) But I was just a happy child (so long ago…) They had me crying in pain (from the pressure…) Big bullies showed me nothing but hate… Apathetic teachers just looked the other way… At home, dad fed me bruises and welts… Through them, I learned to hide every-thing I felt! “Bury it deep down inside.” Keep it hidden away forever… “Carry it with you through life.” A foundation - of pain and terror! “Are you o-kay?” … (why? … I…) “(Hey, kid…) Are you o-kay?” … (I’m… fine??) [chorus] Look at my face, can’t you see me - smile? If you meet my gaze, you might see - it’s a lie! I’ve buried all my feelings - deep down - inside… Repressed screams of out-rage - behind my smile… When I was a young boy (so long ago…) Dad taught me the joy (and ultimate pleasure…) How to “man-ipulate” people (and take control…) Dad trained me to believably lie (and be clever…) My father’s words haunt me to this day… His true intentions – to ensure I became… Just as wretched and deceptive as him… That I could take - and take - and always win! Carry his evil deep inside. Don’t let it out - become better… (not bitter!) Bury those thoughts behind a smile. A foundation of fake happiness for-ever… “Are you all-right?” … (I’m… … I…) “(Hey, kid…) Are you all-right?” … (I sigh…) [chorus] Look at my face! Can’t you see me - smile?! If you meet my gaze! You might see - it’s a lie! I’ve buried all my feelings deep down – inside! Re-pressed screams of out-rage! Behind my smile… Now that I’m older, (wiser), stronger, (smarter…) I look back on my father’s teachings, (sharper…) That furnace of rage – a volcano shakes me (to my core…) Years of pain – a tornado ripping foundations (I’m torn…) I’ve buried it so deep down inside. Kept it hidden away forever (as I cried…) Carried it with me through this broken life. I can’t hold back the explosion - this time! “Hey, kid, are you good?” … NO! “(Hey, man…) Are you good?” … JUST! … GO! [loud chorus] Look at me! Can you see all the dark-ness - inside? If you get in my way, I can’t promise a lie! These buried feelings gush out – are you terrified?! Repressed dreams and night-mares – NO MORE SMILES!! “Are you all-right?” “(I said…) Are you all-right?” When I was a young boy (so long ago…) They told me to put my toys (away for-ever…) But I was just a happy child (so long ago…) They had me crying in pain (from the pressure…) I was taught from the start to lie and hate… Body bruised and broken from an early age… Mind shattered, heart caged, hope fading away… Now that it’s all out of me, I see… I sigh… I remain… You ask if I’m alright… No… I don’t think I’ve ever been… Although… (now…) Now that I’ve unleashed the pain… the sorrow… My smile is genuine, no longer… hollow… [chorus] You look at me and see a broken shell! For decades, I put myself through hell! Repeating what they did to me in the beginning… Just give me time… I’m finally healing… “(Hey, kid…) Are you okay?” … (I will be…) “(Hey, man…) Are you okay?” … (I’m finally… I’m…) (I’m finally…) FFRREEEEEEEEE!
