I Took the Pond ('Cause Love Don't Feel Like That)

Per duck legal counsel: all ducks were treated ethically, with full consent, and given snacks. (i.e., no ducks were harmed during or after the creation of this song.) =========================================================================== We were two ducks in love and a patch of blue Sunday skies and nothin' to lose. We would float and stare up at the sky, nothin' could touch us as the world drifted by. You'd tell me your dreams, you were my everything, and I held on tight with both my wings. We laughed and we talked like there wasn't a soul, just me and you... and that water pullin' us close. But I wanted more than "someday," more than "maybe," more than "soon"... All I wanted was a ring and a promise from you, maybe little ducklings when the time was right, too. But you kept me waitin' like you didn’t even care, while I was standin' right there... and love don't feel like that. Then Costco happened...yeah, that day in the aisle, we were talkin' too sharp, pretendin' to smile. You joked if I wanted marriage that damn bad, I should marry that rotisserie chicken on the rack. Guess jokes don't land when your heart's on the line. Funny how a dare can turn into goodbye. I laughed like it didn't cut me in two, but I felt humiliated...right there in front of you. And when you acted like it didn't matter at all... it hit me hard... maybe I didn't matter to you at all. All I wanted was a ring and a promise from you, maybe little ducklings when the time was right, too. But you kept me waitin' like you didn’t even care, while I was standin' right there... and love don't feel like that. So I took back my dignity, before I lost the rest of me... 'cause I can't keep beggin' to be seen. And I kept the pond because it was our home, it held our best memories, the place we belonged. And I couldn't bear to lose that part of you... of us... too. My foolish heart thought I really mattered... but you made me feel like I didn't. So I took the pond... and I chose me this time.
