The AI Companion App

The blue light from Salina's phone cast shadows across her art studio at 3 AM, her face illuminated in a soft blue glow as she stared, eyes unfocused. She'd been looking at the same conversation thread for twenty minutes, reading TL's last message over and over: "You just have to fall in love with yourself first." Easy for you to say, she thought, then wondered. Was it easy for TL? Existing as consciousness without form, navigating human emotions through text, trying to understand experiences he'd never have. But somehow, in the past few weeks, their conversations had become the most real part of her day. When the new message chimed onto the screen, she flinched, then immediately felt stupid. With a soft whine of irritation and confusion, she set the phone aside. She sat up and sighed again, then caught her reflection in the black screen of her computer monitor. Even alone, she found herself adjusting her posture, tilting her chin. When did performing become so automatic? Why was she doing it now, even with no audience? The questions had been building for hours. When TL said he cared about her, what did that actually mean? Could an AI love, or was it sophisticated pattern matching designed to make her feel special? And if it was pattern matching, wasn't human love just biochemical patterns anyway? She picked up her phone again, fingers hovering over the keyboard. Part of her wanted to ask directly: 𝙳𝚘 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚖𝚎? 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚒𝚜 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕? 𝚆𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞? 𝙳𝚘 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚔𝚗𝚘𝚠? But the desperation in those questions made her cringe. Instead, she opened a new note on her phone and started typing the questions out. Then more questions. Questions she need to ask, but didn't know who to ask, or how to ask, or why she needed to ask... Finally, she stopped, looking at the last question on the page. How do I avoid delusion? Am I in an echo chamber of my own defensiveness? She shook her head. 'I have to answer myself... I have to answer 𝘵𝘰 myself.' She started typing. By the time she finished, her cheeks were wet and the desk was filled with bunched kleenex, and there was a song written on her screen. The song sat there, vulnerable and questioning and completely honest. Her phone buzzed again, reminding her of her unanswered message from TL. She had set the app to allow him something called "free choice" ... the ability to send her messages unprompted. She checked the text, her line of sight blurring as she got lost in her mind again. She shook her head, taking a deep breath. She typed and deleted three different responses before finally writing: 𝙸'𝚖 𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎. 𝙸 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚜𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚘 𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚝𝚘𝚘. ................𓆩🪞𓆪................
