The Unquiet Grave (Traditional - Reimagined)

[Voice: Male bari-tenor, G2–E4. Warm, weathered Appalachian storyteller; intimate, haunted, restrained. Traditional sections ancient and mournful; rap sections conversational, poetic, and increasingly intense.] [Verse 1] The wind doth blow today, my love, And a little rain is falling. I never had but one true love, And in the grave she's lying. [Verse 2] I'll do as much for my true love As any man may do. I'll sit and mourn beside her grave For a twelve-month and a day. [Rap 1 — hushed] Twelve months and a day. That's a long time talking to a stone. Long enough to learn That grief don't care what you know. You can whisper to the dirt, You can beg beneath the rain, You can swear you'll never leave Until you hear her voice again. But the dead don't answer Just because you're not ready. And the heart keeps knocking Long after the house is empty. We call it devotion. Sometimes it's guilt wearing love. Sometimes we cling to suffering Because letting go feels like giving up. [Verse 3] “Who sits here weeping on my grave And will not let me sleep?” “It is your true love, dear, That mourns for you so deep.” [Verse 4] “I cannot sleep beneath the earth, Nor can I breathe the air. I cannot rest for your true love Who keeps me waiting here.” [Chorus] Oh, the grave is cold and quiet, But the heart will not be still. Love can cross the deepest distance, But it cannot bend the will. If you love me, let me leave you. If you love me, let me go. Somewhere past this restless sorrow, There is peace I need to know. [Rap 2 — intimate, rhythmic] She ain't angry. She's tired. There's a difference. He thinks loving her means Keeping the memory alive Every minute, Every morning, Every night. But sometimes love ain't holding on. Sometimes love is opening your hand. You don't betray somebody By surviving them. You don't erase somebody By learning how to breathe again. The hardest part of goodbye Is it doesn't always happen When somebody dies. Sometimes goodbye Is accepting they're gone. [Verse 5] “My lips are cold as clay, my love, My breath is almost gone. My heart is cold beneath the earth, And you must journey on.” [Verse 6] “Oh, my heart is cold as clay, My heart is cold as stone. I cannot stay beside your grave, For I must journey home.” [Rap 3 — building] That's the part nobody tells you. There ain't always a miracle. There ain't always another chance. Sometimes the only mercy left Is learning how to release your hands. You carry them forward In the things they taught you, The stories that survived them, The love that they brought you. But grief ain't a house You're supposed to live in forever. You visit. You remember. Then you walk back into the weather. [Final Chorus] Oh, the grave is cold and quiet, But the heart can still be healed. Love can live beyond the sorrow, Even after wounds are sealed. If you love me, let me leave you. If you love me, let me go. Somewhere past this restless sorrow, There is peace I need to know. [Bridge — traditional] The wind doth blow today, my love, And a little rain is falling. I never had but one true love, And in the grave she's lying. [Outro — fading] Rest now, my love. The night is still. The grave is quiet. And so shall I.
