I still set a place for you at dinner. You ran off the porch on a Tuesday I chased you barefoot down the driveway Mama screamed my name, but I was faster You weren't just something I ......, you were my best friend I told you every secret every morning Things I never said to a single soul You never judged me, never walked away Now the street's a monster that swallowed you whole And I can't eat, I can't sleep I keep your little scuffs on my sneakers They took you away like you were nothing But you were everything, you were everything to me Day you died, I died a little too Half of me got flattened on that street I still whisper to the sky where you used to be Vollie, come back, come back to me Day you died, I died a little too I was ten years old and already see-through They don't get it, they don't have a clue Vollie, come back, come back to me Grandma said, "Baby, it's just a ......" I slammed my door so hard the hinges cried Your name's in marker, faded on your side You were the only one who heard me when the house got loud I drew your face on every notebook page Wrote your name in chalk across the drive Kids at school say I'm too old for this But grief don't check your birthday, it just arrives And I can't breathe, I can't speak I keep your little dirt prints on my sleeve They tossed you in a can like you were nothing But you were everything, you were everything Day you died, I died a little too Half of me got flattened on that street I still whisper to the sky where you used to be Vollie, come back, come back to me Day you died, I died a little too Ten years old and already see-through They don't get it, they don't have a clue Vollie, come back, come back to me I saw the car. I saw the whole thing. You bounced once... then you didn't bounce again. Neighbor lady held me back, said, "Honey, stop" But I was screaming, barefoot on the road You were my ball, you were my girl You were the only thing in my life, I Loved I'll never get over it. I don't want to. If I get over you, then who am I? Who am I? Day you died, I died a little too Half of me got flattened on that street I still whisper to the air where you used to be Vollie, come back, come back to me Day you died, I died a little too Ten years old and still see-through They don't get it, they don't have a clue Vollie... I'm still here, I'm still here for you I'll keep your spot on my bed forever. Goodnight, Vollie.
