Lyrics
[Title: Before the Sky Had Names] [BPM: 94] [Key: D minor, Dorian lift in final chorus] [Time Signature: rolling 6/8, 4/4 impact bars] [Cast: V1 Starfall, V2 throat singer, V3 ritual ensemble] [V1: contralto-alto, chest resonance, restrained rasp, open-vowel cries] [V2: bass kargyraa, sparse responses] [V3: distant calls, stomp responses] [Instrumentation: barrel drum, vargan, igil, khomys, bass guitar] [Intro: winter wind, bowed D drone, barrel drum] [V2: free-time throat drone] Hrrrrr-ooooom… Urrrrr-aaaa… Dhooo-rrr… Hrrrohm… [V1: distant invocation] Ayra-hei… Aaa-yei… Ayra-hei… Haa… [Verse 1: V1, sparse khomys, frame drum] Before the sky had names, there was a pulse beneath the snow, slow enough the stones could hear it. No temple held its breath, no hand had carved a god from thunder, but something moved below our feet and roots leaned down to wonder. I put my palm against the hide. It answered beneath the winter. Not words. Not prophecy. A heartbeat older than the singer. [V2] Hrrrr-khoor… Rhoom… [Pre-Chorus: V1, igil rising] I asked the night, Who called me here? The night said nothing— then drew me near. I asked the drum, What do you know? [One Beat Silence] [V3: whisper] Everything you buried below. [Chorus: V1, barrel drum and bowed strings] Beat me a road through the black and white, carry my breath where the old stars hide. If I lose my name in the turning snow, let the drum remember where I go. Ayra-hei, let the deep earth ring, bone to the rhythm and blood to the string. I am not asking the dark for a sign— I am listening back through the oldest time. [V2] HROHM! Rhoom-na… Hrrrr-khoor… [Post-Chorus: V3] Ayra-hei! Ayra-hei! Rhoom-na! Haa! [Verse 2: V1, jaw harp pulse] I dreamed a wolf made out of smoke walked backward through a frozen river. Its eyes were moons I did not know, its shadow shook but did not shiver. It stopped where no tracks remained and pressed its muzzle to my breathing. Behind its ribs, a thousand drums were waking, sleeping, waking, sleeping. It turned away. I followed where the ice grew thinner. Underneath the frozen skin I heard a choir without a singer. [V2] Ghuur-rraaa… Hrrrr-rohm… Ghuur-rraaa… Rhoom… [Pre-Chorus 2] I asked the wind, What lives out there? It filled my lungs with ancient air. I asked my blood, What do you know? [V3: whisper] More than the mind will ever show. [Chorus: full ensemble] Beat me a road through the black and white, carry my breath where the old stars hide. If I lose my name in the turning snow, let the drum remember where I go. Ayra-hei, let the deep earth ring, bone to the rhythm and blood to the string. I am not asking the dark for a sign— I am listening back through the oldest time. [Instrumental Ritual: igil, khomys, vargan] [V1] Aaa-yeee-yaa… Ora-hei… Aaa-yeee-yaa… Ayra-hei… [Bridge: drums fall away] There are things we carry that were never ours alone. A fear with no beginning. A song without a home. There are dreams inside the marrow remembering other skies, and grief that crossed a thousand years to look out through our eyes. Maybe memory is larger than the names we keep. Maybe every living heartbeat is a door the dead can reach. Maybe nothing disappears. Maybe nothing truly ends. Maybe every hand upon the drum is touching ancient hands. [V2: sustained throat tone] Hrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr… Khoooooorrrrr… Rhoooooom… [Build: barrel drum returns, one strike at a time] [V1] Then beat. [Drum] Again. [Drum] Again. [Drum] Until the mountain answers. [Full Drum Entry] [V1] AYRA-HEI! [V3] (AYRA-HEI!) [V1] ORA-YA! [V3] (ORA-YA!) [V2] HROHM! [Climax: 4/4 impact, full drums, igil soaring] [V1] I heard the mountain breathe my name— not the one that mouths remember. Something underneath the sound, something older than December. No crown. No creed. No written line. No heaven waiting to receive. Only rhythm crossing time saying: You were never empty. If every life becomes an echo, let mine return with open hands. Let it move through fur and feather, through the rivers and the lands. Let some child in some far winter hear one heartbeat through the floor, place a palm against the drumskin— [One Beat Silence] —and know they have been here before. [Final Chorus: Dorian lift, full organic power] Beat me a road through the black and white, carry my breath where the new stars rise. If I lose my name in the turning snow, let the drum remember where I go. Ayra-hei, let the whole earth sing, breath to the rhythm and soul to the string. I am not asking the dark for a sign— I am answering back through the oldest time. [V3] (Ayra-hei!) (Ayra-hei!) (Rhoom-na!) (Haa!) [V2] Hrrrrrrrr-khoor… Rhoooooom… [Final Refrain: instruments fall away] [V1] Before the sky had names… before the fire knew our faces… there was a pulse beneath the snow. And there still is [Outro: bass ends, drums slow, igil and wind] [V1: soft] Ayra-hei… [V2] Hrrrohm… [Final Cadence: one soft barrel-drum strike] Dhoom… [Silence] [End]
