Lyrics
[Verse 1] Hush now baby boy the night's leaning warm And mama's holding you close through the storm I carried you a whole and hope like a lantern in the rain Your daddy's hands were dreaming but the world called out his name I felt you kick the moment that I heard he wouldn't stay And all the stars I leaned on seemed to flicker out that day [Chorus] But you were still inside me Beating steady brave and true A tiny light that whispered mama I'll get you through So when you wonder why his shadow never stands behind your chair Why there's no boots by the doorway why his laugh ain't in the air Know he loved you from a distance that he never meant to roam And though he's gone beyond our reach his heart is still your home (Oh-oh-oh-oh) [Verse 2] I'll tell you about the letters that he wrote but never sent About the way he touched my belly like it was heaven bent I see him in your eyes boy how they shine like morning dew A little spark of all the tenderness he carried in for you [Bridge] And someday when you're older and the world feels fierce and wild You'll ask me where he wandered why he never met his child I'll hold you like I did tonight and swear this truth alive He loved you with a fire that could break the darkest cloud [Chorus] So when you wonder why his shadow never stands behind your chair Why there's no boots by the doorway why his laugh ain't in the air Know he loved you from a distance that he never meant to roam And though he's gone beyond our reach his heart is still your home [Outro] Sleep now baby boy mama's here you're not alone For every step you take he's the heartbeat in your bones
