[INTRO – low, exhausted Southern drawl] Neon too bright... City too big... Everybody walkin' like they know where they're goin'... [beat] I been lost for three hours. [beat] I ain't askin' nobody. I got pride. [beat] And Google Maps. [VERSE 1 – restrained, conversational rap] I'm wanderin' these alleys feelin' small as a matchstick, Tryna find a little home in all this neon madness. Lit one up beside a vending machine, prayin' for calm, Sippin' moonshine from a flask like a memory in my palm. Everybody's movin', nobody knows my name, Ten thousand signs are glowin', but they all look the same. I thought my holler-heart songs were too weird, too crude— Tokyo's so damn big... [beat] ...it swallowed up my mood. [beat] Then something moved behind me. [Voice: quiet, nervous whisper] I ain't gonna lie... [beat] I was a little scared. [FX: trashcan clang] [Voice: startled, confused Southern drawl] What the hell?! [Voice: high, nasal, excited, breathless] Hey, are you the hillbilly DJ?! [Voice: suspicious, conversational Southern drawl] ...who told you about me? [Voice: high, nasal, cheerful, rapid] Everybody! [beat] [Voice: quiet, deadpan Southern drawl] ...that's worse. [PRE-CHORUS – wonder building into excitement] Didn't think anybody'd know me, Didn't think anybody'd care, Then the shadows started movin' Like they'd been waitin' there. Little Yokai hummin' my verses, Tengu dropping from the sky, Kappa yelling, “Pass the jar!” And I damn near lost my mind. Kitsune changed her face— [beat] —into mine. [Voice: impressed, bewildered Southern drawl] Okay, that's impressive. [Voice: high, playful, mischievous] I can do your beard too. [beat] [Voice: horrified Southern shout] Please don't. [BPM RISE – accelerating] [FX: taiko hits, rising synth, banjo rolls] [HOOK – huge melodic rap] Tokyo hits different— Hittin' smoke with the Yokai! Neon got me lifted— Whole damn street knows my name! Tokyo hits different— Everything done gone sideways! Pass that cosmic moonshine— Let the Yokai start the parade! [Voice: hyped Southern shout] Yee yee! [VERSE 2 – rapid, increasingly ridiculous] Tanuki got my lyrics tattooed across his belly, Said he got 'em from a bootleg sticker vendor in Shibuya. [Voice: confused Southern drawl] That's not even the right damn verse. [Voice: high, nasal, cheerful, completely unapologetic] I know. I like this one better. Kitsune shapeshiftin' into everybody I know, Then she turned into my mama. [beat] [Voice: horrified Southern drawl] Nope. Tengu doing backflips while he's stealing from my coat, Came back with my wallet— [beat] —and somehow more money than I had before. Kappa sippin' moonshine like it's water from the spring, I said, “Brother, that's ninety proof.” [Voice: deep, slow, satisfied] Yes. [beat] [Voice: deep, rhythmic, enthusiastic] Then he started singing. Kodama tappin' rhythms with their little wooden feet, Oni beatbox booming underneath the subway street. I came here thinkin' nobody'd recognize my sound— [beat] Turns out the Yokai been bumpin' me underground. [Voice: distant, rhythmic, multiple-layered delivery from the same voice] Hill-bil-ly! Hill-bil-ly! Hill-bil-ly! [Voice: amazed Southern drawl, laughing under his breath] Oh, hell. I'm famous in Japan. [BRIDGE – suddenly beautiful, intimate] Never thought a neon city would feel like home to me... Never thought a bunch of monsters would be the ones to see... That underneath the banjo, underneath the jokes and noise, I'm just some backwoods fool tryin' to find his voice. I spent my whole damn life thinkin' I was too strange... [Voice: soft, intimate Southern whisper] Turns out... I just needed stranger friends. [FINAL HOOK – explosive, triumphant] Tokyo hits different— Hittin' smoke with the Yokai! Neon got me lifted— Whole damn city's yellin' my name! Tokyo hits different— Cryptids jumpin' beside me! Kappa's got the moonshine, Tengu's flyin'! Kitsune's shapeshiftin', Tanuki's throwin' sparks! I'm a hillbilly from the holler and we're lightin' up the dark! Tokyo hits different— I ain't lonely anymore! I came lookin' for a place to fit— [beat drop] [Voice: huge triumphant Southern shout] They kicked open the door! [Voice: enormous, rhythmic, excited, layered delivery from the same vocalist] Yokai! Yokai! Yokai! [Voice: triumphant Southern shout] Yee yee! [beat] Wait... [Voice: conversational, confused Southern drawl] Why's that Oni wearing my hat? [Voice: deep, low, guttural grunt] Hrrrmmm. [Voice: amused Southern drawl] ...actually, he wears it better. [OUTRO – quiet, amused Southern drawl] I thought I came to Tokyo to find a little peace... [beat] Instead I found six hundred monsters who know every damn song I made. [small laugh] I think... I found my people. [beat] ...God help Tokyo. [FX: enormous Yokai cheer → koto shimmer → banjo lick → taiko hit → distant Tanuki laugh → city ambience fade]
