✍🏻 LYRICS/COMPOSITION BY EME LATINA (2026) ----------- ABOUT: ----------- The Circuit, Round 9: Indie x Folk Vocal: Male Instrument: Acoustic Guitar Word to use: Wildflower Indie folk is folk songwriting with a more intimate, modern, slightly alternative presentation. Unlike traditional folk, indie folk often leans into atmosphere: soft reverb, imperfect textures, layered harmonies, restrained percussion, ambient electric guitar, subtle strings, or little production quirks that make it feel contemporary. 📝 This song began less as a story about one relationship and more as a metaphor. We can be beautiful enough to be picked, pressed, and preserved, but once removed from the wind, rain, and soil that let us grow, even something carefully kept can still be forgotten between the very same pages that hold it, or crushed beneath too much weight. So when he says, “She was never just a wildflower,” he means she was never something meant simply to be plucked and kept. Love should leave room for us to remain fully alive and untamed, even if that means recognizing going separate ways. He also says, "I hope she always returns," and this is more about returning to herself than to his love. I used the symbolism of many wildflowers in writing this. Hope you like it! 🖼️ FUN FACT: Lupine is also native to my home country, and it's the only flower in the imagery not talked about in the present tense. It's only mentioned thru the painting hanging in the hallway. That's her longing. Yes, technically, I do mention cornflowers (which are not native, but rather introduced to my country), but this is meant as a bridge. They are typically a symbol for remembrance. ----------- LYRICS: ----------- I was still young enough to think back then that loving something meant I had to keep it somehow. There was a painting in the hallway of a field I didn't recognize: lupine leaning into the August wind, cornflowers like her very eyes... She’d stop beneath it every morning, dreaming until her tea went cold, staring like she recognized some countryside she had never told me of. There were black-eyed Susans bending by the road outside our place, and every time we drove past them she’d turn away, look out the window with that far-off look across her face... I thought she was distracted, barely reacted when I spoke... and I knew, she was remembering another version of herself... She was never just a wildflower, never something I could press between the pages of a life I thought was happiness... She was fireweed, goldenrod, the kind of beauty that appears and you always hope returns... And I loved her like a man who hadn’t learned the difference yet between holding someone close and asking them to forget their wilderness. Clover, aster, columbine, looking back, there were signs... She was never just a wildflower, never something I could press between the pages of a life I thought was happiness... She was fireweed, goldenrod, the kind of beauty that appears and you hope always returns... (I hope she always returns...) I tried to tend her like a garden, she was never meant that way— some things remain as beautiful only when they're left untamed... If she’s blooming somewhere else, I hope she stayed that way... (I hope she stayed that way) She was never just a wildflower, not my wildflower to tame; never something I could press, never something I could claim... She was fireweed, goldenrod, the kind of beauty that appears and you hope and you hope and you hope... she always returns... (I hope she always returns...)
