Consider it a song processing grief through dream journaling. The lyrics are intentionally fragmented and abstract. I wanted contrast between surreal imagery and simple emotional lines to ground the song in that middle ground between my dreams and my experience. The religious imagery is used more as memory and atmosphere than belief itself; like things in your mind that find their way into your subconscious. “Like the birth of a dying star” is my way of using contradiction to drive a point. Emotionally and intellectually we already know there's an end, so we're more or less already born corpses. Meaning of "falling stars": • shooting stars • failed wishes • death • inevitability Ultimately, the song is a microcosm of how we might exist inside grief. It is a reminder that no matter how tightly we hold onto moments or people, time continues to move through us and away from us anyway. ------------ LYRICS: ------------ You’re the ripple in the ocean that I can’t tame, The dream I dream of you is always the same The dream I dream of you is always the same The dream I dream of.... Twisted, fractured Endangered, and wrong I want to destroy Something beautiful And I know, I know the sound Of falling stars as they hit the ground Fingers press against the glass Time slips in and moments pass Every grief like a sheath for the sword of joy left in me Put it back in Hold and retreat Bask in the defeat Love is life’s cruel guillotine The sky is cracked, it’s bleeding red, I saw you there, but you were dead Paper faces and glass-eyed saints, Worn out pages, the writing’s faint… And I know, I know the sound Of falling stars as they hit the ground It’s a shiver, it’s a song… It’s a hollow bell that rings for far too long Fingers press against the glass Time slips in and moments pass… And I know, I know the sound Of falling stars as they hit the ground Twisted, fractured Endangered, and wrong I want to destroy Something beautiful Like the birth of a dying star I am nothing, nothing at all
