Ghosts on a Highway

I watch the headlights die on that two-lane blacktop Where the fields go on forever and the night don’t stop You said it was nothing, just a handful of miles Just county-line silence and a whole lot of smiles But this town don’t loosen and the past don’t untie There’s a life I can’t walk from, no matter how hard I try I told you I’d come when the timing felt true Then the timing kept moving and it never brought you It should’ve been easy Just two hearts and the land A straight shot of asphalt And the reach of a hand But the roads ain’t honest And the maps don’t explain Why the shortest way home Is the one we can’t take We stay where we are I sit in that diner where the neon lights buzz Counting the hours, I forgot where I was The highway looks empty, like it wants to be kind As if it doesn’t know every thought in my mind You think I could turn around and finally appear Like the distance is only thing keeping me here But some truths don’t travel, some names still remain Some doors, once you close them, don’t open again It should’ve been easy Just two hearts and land A straight shot of asphalt And the reach of a hand But the roads ain’t honest And the maps don’t explain Why the shortest way home Is the one we can’t take We stay where we are I still leave the porch light burning like a fool I still check the rearview for a truck that ain’t you I'd cut off that highway and break every rule I know you would baby, sometimes you're a fool It should’ve been easy It never was It should’ve been easy Just two hearts and land A straight shot of asphalt And the reach of a hand But some loves are built On the things we won’t say On the towns we can’t leave On the lives in the way We stay where we are In the space in between Two ghosts on the highway That should’ve been seen It should’ve been easy. It never was. And it never will be.
